What Is Pixel Pitch? How to Choose the Right LED Display (2026 Guide)

A frequent mistake in LED display projects is picking the pixel pitch from a product list instead of from the distance people will actually stand. When two quotes for a P1.2 vs. P2.5 LED display are far apart in price but look similar on paper, the real question is how far away the audience sits.

This guide explains what pixel pitch is, how it relates to viewing distance, why smaller pitches cost so much more, and how to choose a starting pitch for your application.

1. What Is Pixel Pitch?

Pixel pitch is the distance, in millimeters, from the center of one LED pixel to the center of the next. On a spec sheet it appears as a "P" number: P1.2, P2.5, P4, P10.

The pixel pitch meaning is easiest to see as visual density. Think of a screen made of lights. If the lights are far apart, you can see the dark gaps between them. As they get closer, they blend into one continuous surface. A P1.2 screen packs its pixels tightly enough that the structure is hard to see from a couple of meters away. On a P10 screen the pixels sit 10 mm apart, so it looks coarse up close, but from across a highway it reads as a clear billboard.

The inverse relationship

  • Smaller number (P0.9, P1.5): more pixels per area, more detail, designed for close viewing.

  • Larger number (P6, P10): fewer pixels per area, lower resolution, but higher brightness potential and better cost efficiency for long distances.

The practical consequence: for an indoor meeting room, P1.2 can look impressive on a quotation, but it may not give a meaningful visual advantage over P1.5 or P1.8 if the audience sits 5–6 meters away.

2. Why Resolution Is Not a Fixed Spec on an LED Wall

On a TV, resolution is fixed by the panel. On an LED wall, resolution is the result of two choices: how big the screen is and what pitch you pick.

A 4K-wide canvas is 3,840 pixels across. At P2.5 that is 3,840 × 2.5 mm = 9.6 m wide. At P1.25 the same 3,840 pixels fit in 4.8 m. So you cannot ask for "a 4K LED wall" without also giving the available width and the viewing distance. Space, clarity and budget always pull against each other.

3. The Pixel Pitch and Viewing Distance Chart

The most common question is "which pitch do I need?", and the answer starts with another question: where will the audience stand? Past a certain distance the eye can no longer separate individual pixels and the image blends into one surface. That is the point you are designing for.

The chart below shows pixels per square meter by pixel pitch, together with approximate viewing distances and typical uses.

There is no universal viewing-distance formula for every LED display. Pixel pitch should be evaluated together with content type, screen size, camera requirements, brightness and the audience's actual position. Many suppliers use the pitch in millimeters as a rough minimum distance in meters, while others use a larger multiplier for critical close viewing, so treat the starting distance as a starting point.

4. How Pixel Pitch Affects LED Display Cost

Cost rises much faster than linearly as pitch gets smaller, because pixel count grows with the square of the pitch change. Going from P4 to P2 doubles the pixels horizontally and doubles them vertically, so the same square meter holds four times as many LED chips and driver channels, with more complex PCB wiring.

Below roughly P1.0, many suppliers move from SMD to COB (Chip on Board) or similar packaging, where bare chips are mounted directly on the board. If you are considering COB for a fine-pitch installation, the packaging technology becomes especially important at that point. We explain the practical differences in our SMD vs COB LED display guide.

If your audience is 10 meters away, a P1.5 screen means paying for detail the eye cannot resolve at that distance. Realistic indoor price ranges by pitch are in our indoor fixed LED display buying guide.

5. Pixel Pitch for Text Heavy Content vs Video

Content type matters as much as distance.

Text and data (control rooms, meeting rooms). Spreadsheets, technical drawings and small fonts are the hardest content for an LED screen to render. If the pitch is too coarse, letter curves look jagged and readers tire quickly. For close reading, the P0.9–P1.5 range is the usual starting point.

Video and branding (retail, stage backgrounds). Moving images are more forgiving, so a larger pitch such as P2.5–P3.91 often works when viewers stand further back. Close viewing changes that, because people start to notice the pixel structure again even in video. If a wall still looks rough up close after you've picked a pitch, the cause is often something other than pitch. See why an LED wall can look grainy up close for what to check.

6. Choosing a Starting Pitch by Application

The table below pairs typical applications with a starting pitch range and a published project of ours at a similar pitch.

These ranges are starting points, not fixed specifications. The final pitch should be confirmed after considering the actual viewing distance, screen dimensions, content and installation environment.

7. Fine Pitch LED Display Calibration and Maintenance

A smaller pitch costs more to own as well as to buy.

  • Fragility. On a fine pitch module the lamps are very small, so the surface is more sensitive to physical damage than a wider-pitch product. Individual lamp repair is usually done at the factory; on site, the practical fix is swapping the module.

  • Heat and power. Smaller pitch packs more LEDs into each area and generates more heat, so thermal design and ventilation matter more.

  • Calibration. LEDs age at different rates. Recalibrating a fine pitch wall to keep color uniform takes more work than calibrating a P6 screen.

8. Final Thoughts

When you review a quote, do not treat the smallest "P" number as proof you are buying the best screen. Do a site walk instead: stand where your audience will stand and measure that distance. The goal is an image that looks continuous at that distance, and any pitch finer than that is money better spent on content, a larger screen or higher brightness.

In the projects listed above, the pitch followed the actual viewing distance: P1.25 for an operator wall viewed from 1–5 m, P1.86 for a showroom wall where buyers stand about 1.5 m away. The best screen is not the one with the most pixels. It is the one that balances viewing distance, content and budget. If you are comparing two pitches, ask the supplier for a side-by-side mock-up, because seeing a P1.8 next to a P2.5 is the most reliable way to decide whether the price difference is worth it for your space.
