We recently completed the fabrication and delivery of an outdoor LED display upgrade for a flagship highway gas station just outside São Paulo, Brazil. The system includes a dual-sided roadside totem display and a long canopy screen.
Instead of a polished marketing brochure, this post breaks down the actual on-site conditions, our hardware selection process, and how we handled the structural and environmental challenges for this LATAM deployment.
The gas station sits right next to a busy highway where traffic moves at around 100km/h. For a driver traveling at that speed, the window to notice a station, read the fuel prices, and safely pull over is less than 3 seconds.
The client's main issue was simple: their old static signage was practically invisible during the day.They needed a solution that was sharp and punchy enough under direct tropical sunlight to catch a driver's eye from over 150 meters away.
Furthermore, the weather in the São Paulo region is highly unpredictable. The screens have to endure intense midday UV exposure and heat, followed by sudden, heavy tropical downpours and high humidity.
Pushing past 6,500 Nits for Daytime Clarity: Standard outdoor screens usually top out around 4,000 to 5,000 nits, which tends to look washed out under bright South American sunlight. For this project, we used high-contrast, large-chip LED diodes to push the brightness past 6,500 nits. This ensures that fuel prices remain completely legible even at high noon.
Custom Frame Construction with High Anti-Corrosion: Gas stations naturally have fuel vapors in the air, which accelerates rust when combined with high humidity. Instead of generic housing, we engineered a heavy-duty structural internal frame with a specialized anti-corrosion protective coating, specifically designed to retrofitted seamlessly into the station's existing totem. Combined with fully sealed, IP66 waterproof modules, the entire structure front-to-back is built to handle the coastal air and heavy rain without risking structural degradation or water ingress.
Smart Auto-Dimming for Highway Safety: Running a screen at full brightness at night is dangerous for highway drivers and wastes energy. We integrated an automatic light sensor into the control system. As the sun sets, the screen smoothly dials back its output to match the ambient environment. This protects passing drivers' eyes and cuts the station’s evening power consumption by roughly 30%.
Dual-Sided Roadside Totem (4mx2m): We stripped out the station's old plastic insert board and mounted our customized P5 framework directly into the existing steel totem structure. This screen focuses entirely on real-time pricing (Gasolina, Etanol, Diesel) and high-impact branding.
Canopy Lane Screen (6mx1m): This horizontal strip screen was mounted via a tailored bracket frame directly above the main fueling bays. While drivers wait for their tanks to fill, the display loops promotions for the convenience store—specifically targeting cross-sales like their morning coffee and Pão de Queijo combos.
It has been three months since the screens went live, and the station manager reports a 35% increase in daily vehicle turn-ins, along with a noticeable bump in convenience store sales.
Operationally, it solved a major safety issue. Previously, staff had to climb tall ladders in bad weather to manually change plastic price digits. Today, the manager updates prices across all screens simultaneously via a smartphone app in under 10 seconds.
