If you ask me which technical specification matters most for an outdoor LED project, my answer is always brightness. No doubt about it.
When you are sourcing screens for overseas system integrators or digital out-of-home (DOOH) advertising setups, choosing the wrong brightness will ruin the project. If it's too dim, the sun washes out your ads, and your client loses money. If it's too bright at night, neighbors complain about the glare, and you might end up with a local government penalty ticket.
Let’s skip the confusing textbook definitions and talk about what a real, sustainable outdoor LED display brightness standard looks like in the actual engineering field.
When you read a factory’s quote sheet, you will always see brightness measured in cd/m² or Nits. Don't let the jargon confuse you—they mean the exact same thing:
1 cd/m² = 1 Nit
To give you a quick reality check: your iPhone screen tops out around 800 nits, and a home TV usually runs at 300 nits. But for an outdoor screen that has to fight the sun every single day, you need something much more powerful.
I always tell our clients: "More nits isn't always better." If you push the brightness too high unnecessarily, you are just burning through electricity, overheating the cabinet, and cutting the lifespan of the LED lamps short.
Here is how we break down the brightness requirements based on where and how you install the screen:
Under a Canopy or Roof (Semi-Outdoor): 2,000 to 3,500 Nits. Since the screen is shaded from direct sunlight, this is plenty of power to handle scattered ambient light in transit stations or stadium corridors.
North-Facing Screens (No Direct Sunlight): 5,000 to 6,000 Nits. If the billboard never faces the blazing sun directly, a solid 5,500nits setup will keep your contrast clean and colors vivid all day long.
South-Facing Screens (Direct Midday Sun): 6,500 to 8,500+ Nits. This is the toughest spot. If the sun hits the screen head-on at noon, you must go above 7,000 nits. Otherwise, the display will look completely washed out and milky.
Transparent Glass LED Displays: 4,500 to 6,000 Nits. Because of the hollow structure of architectural glass film, we use high-efficiency chips to make up for the light lost through the gaps.
If a supplier promises you a 7,000 nits screen on a cheap quote, you should be careful. To achieve a real, long-lasting outdoor brightness standard, you need to check these three hardware components:
We use larger, premium LED lamp packages (like SMD2727 or SMD3535). Why? Because a larger chip can pump out more light at a lower current. It stays cooler, which means less light degradation over the years.
White-Body LEDs are highly reflective. They hit ultra-high bright marks 7,500 nits or more) very easily and cheaply, but the contrast is weak. They are okay for distant highway billboards.
Black-Body LEDs use a matte black casing. They lose a little bit of raw brightness (usually peaking at $5,500 6,500 nits, but the contrast is incredible. The colors are deep and rich, making them the best choice for high-end retail facades.
Static driving (1/1 scan) keeps the LEDs powered on longer for maximum brightness, while multiplexed scanning (1/4 or 1/8 scan) saves energy. Pair this with a high refresh rate (3,840Hz) driving IC, and you get a bright screen that looks flawless through a phone camera—no ugly black scan lines when people film it for social media.
If you ship screens to Europe or North America, you have to deal with strict local laws regarding night-time light pollution and energy use.
The 10% Rule for Night-Time Operation:
Running a screen at 6,500 nits at 2:00 AM is a huge mistake—it blinds drivers and annoys neighbors. The smart way to handle this is to drop the brightness down to 800 ~1,200 text nits at night (about 10% to 15% of daytime power).

Before you sign any purchase agreement with a factory, make sure you ask them these three questions:
"Is this the White Balance Brightness?" Make sure the nits they quote are measured when Red, Green, and Blue are all running at 100% full power.
"What is the brightness drop after 2 hours?" All screens lose brightness when they get hot. A well-ventilated aluminum cabinet should keep this thermal drop under 5%.
"Are you using constant-current drivers?" Never accept constant-voltage options for large outdoor builds; they cause voltage drops, which make parts of your screen look dim and uneven.
