LED Display Landed Cost Calculator: Formula & Real Examples for US And EU Imports (2026)

Last updated: September 2026

Disclaimer: Duty rates, tariff surcharges, and fees referenced below reflect published rates as of the date above and are provided for budgeting purposes only. They are not customs, tax, or legal advice. Always confirm the current rate for your exact HS/HTS code with a licensed customs broker before you finalize a purchase order. Tariff treatment can depend on the exact product classification and country of origin.

The FOB price of an LED display is only one part of the total cost of importing it. Freight, insurance, customs duties, import taxes, and clearance fees can all affect the final landed cost. For buyers importing LED displays into the United States or the EU, the gap between FOB price and landed cost can be significant, and the exact amount depends on the product classification, country of origin, shipping method, and destination.

This guide explains how to calculate landed cost for an LED screen step by step, and works through two full import cost calculator examples — one for a US shipment, one for an EU shipment — so you can see exactly how the numbers differ.

The Landed Cost Formula

Landed Cost = Product Cost + International Freight + Insurance + Customs Duties & Tariffs + Import Taxes (VAT, where applicable) + Handling/Brokerage Fees

Each component:

  • Product Cost — the FOB (Free on Board) price agreed with the supplier before the goods leave the origin port.

  • International Freight — ocean or air freight from the origin port to the destination port or airport.

  • Insurance — marine cargo insurance, typically 0.3%–0.5% of the CIF (Cost + Insurance + Freight) value.

  • Customs Duties & Tariffs — the percentage charged by the destination country, calculated on the customs (CIF) value.

  • Import Taxes — VAT in the EU (charged on customs value + duty); the US has no federal import VAT, but does charge processing fees (below).

  • Handling/Brokerage Fees — customs broker fees, port handling, and for US shipments specifically, the Merchandise Processing Fee (MPF) and Harbor Maintenance Fee (HMF).

What Duty Rate Actually Applies to LED Displays?

Accurate product classification is one of the most important parts of estimating landed cost. Using a generic tariff rate for all products from China can produce misleading estimates, because duty treatment depends on the specific HS/HTS or CN/TARIC classification.

United States. LED video wall tiles and LED display modules from China fall under HTS 8528.59.3370 ("Other monitors"), which carries a 5% general (MFN) duty rate, per CBP ruling N310939. China-origin goods under this HTS line also carry a Section 301 additional duty of 25% (Chapter 99 code 9903.88.15). Based on these published rates, the combined baseline duty in this example is 30% of the customs value.

Additional tariff measures and exemptions can change the final duty treatment, and the treatment of certain additional US tariff measures — including reciprocal/IEEPA-related layers that applied through 2025 — has changed during recent policy and legal developments. The applicable rate should always be confirmed for the specific shipment and entry date before import, using the USITC's Harmonized Tariff Schedule and USTR's Section 301 tariff actions page, or with a licensed customs broker.

European Union. Bare LED display modules and cabinets may be classified differently from complete monitor products with integrated housings or stands. Modules typically fall under HS 8524 ("flat panel display modules"), which carries a 0% MFN duty rate for third-country imports, China included. Complete "monitor" products with integrated housings and stands can instead fall under heading 8528, where the rate depends on the exact configuration — the CN/TARIC code should be confirmed with a broker rather than assumed. On top of duty, the EU (unlike the US) charges import VAT on the customs value plus duty, at the standard rate of the importing member state — commonly 19–25% depending on the country (19% in Germany, 21% in the Netherlands, for example).

Worked Example 1: US Import (Ocean Freight)

Assumptions for this example:

  • Product: outdoor P4 LED display cabinets

  • Country of origin: China

  • Shipping method: ocean freight

  • Incoterm: FOB

  • Duty calculation: based on the tariff treatment described above at the time of writing

$63.69

Customs broker/clearance fee

flat estimate

$150.00

Total Landed Cost

≈ $66,575.18

In this example, the total landed cost is approximately 39% higher than the FOB product price. Customs duties account for the largest additional cost component.

Worked Example 2: EU Import (Ocean Freight, Germany)

Assumptions for this example: same product and shipping method as above, FOB price in EUR, cleared through Germany.

Component

Calculation

Amount

Product cost (FOB)

—

€44,000.00

Ocean freight

—

€2,600.00

19% × (CIF + duty)

€8,880.60

Customs clearance/broker fee

flat estimate

€180.00

Total Landed Cost

≈ €55,800.60

Although the total landed cost in this example is approximately 27% above the FOB value, the cost structure differs from the US example. Here, import VAT accounts for most of the additional amount, and — unlike a customs duty — VAT is typically recoverable as input tax for a VAT-registered business reselling or deploying the display commercially. US duties, by contrast, are not recoverable.

What Actually Moves This Number

Several factors can materially change the final landed cost:

  • Air freight instead of ocean removes HMF (ocean-only) but raises freight cost, so it typically only makes sense for urgent or small orders.

  • Incorrect HS/HTS classification can significantly affect landed cost. In the EU, the classification difference between a display module and a complete monitor product may affect duty treatment. In the US, classification may also affect which additional tariffs apply.

  • Tariff measures can change between entry dates. The applicable US rate in particular should be confirmed close to the shipment date rather than assumed from a prior quote.

  • VAT registration status determines whether EU VAT is a real cost or a recoverable pass-through for a given business.

Bottom Line

For preliminary budgeting, these examples show that US landed costs can increase substantially once customs duties, additional tariffs, freight, and processing fees are included — roughly 35–40% over FOB price in this scenario. EU imports can have a different cost structure, particularly where import VAT represents a significant part of the amount paid at import — roughly 25–30% over FOB price here, much of which may be recoverable depending on VAT status.

The final figure should always be confirmed using the correct product classification, country of origin, destination country, shipping terms, and current customs rules — ideally with a freight forwarder or customs broker before formal documentation is issued.

Planning an LED Display Project?

A landed cost estimate should be based on the actual product configuration, order value, shipping method, destination, and applicable customs classification. Before placing an order, buyers should confirm these assumptions with their freight forwarder or customs broker.
