When customers ask us about outdoor LED modules, one of the most common questions is:
“Should I use DIP or SMD?”
There is no single answer.
After supplying LED modules for outdoor advertising signs, commercial displays, and custom signage projects, we have found that the right choice usually depends less on which LED package is newer and more on where the sign will be installed, how far people will be from it, what content it will display, and how the display will be maintained.
For a highway sign viewed from dozens of meters away, the priorities are different from a storefront display viewed from only a few meters.
This is why we recommend selecting the LED module based on the actual application rather than choosing DIP or SMD simply because one technology appears more advanced.
DIP and SMD describe two different LED packaging technologies used in LED displays.
DIP stands for Dual In-line Package.
The LED components are mounted through holes in the PCB, with the pins passing through the board. This construction has been widely used in outdoor LED signage, especially for applications where high brightness, long viewing distances, and straightforward maintenance are important.
DIP modules are still commonly considered for:
Highway advertising signs
Large outdoor signage
Gas station displays
Commercial roadside signs
Price and information displays
Long-distance viewing applications
One reason is simple: many of these projects do not require extremely fine pixel pitch. Instead, they need a display that remains bright and readable in outdoor conditions.
SMD stands for Surface-Mount Device.
The LED package is mounted directly onto the surface of the PCB. SMD technology allows manufacturers to achieve smaller pixel pitches and more compact pixel arrangements.
For this reason, SMD is commonly selected when the display needs:
Higher resolution
Smaller pixel pitch
Better close-range image quality
Full-color advertising content
More flexible display designs
Neither technology is automatically the better choice. The application determines which one makes more sense.
This is one of the first things we normally check when discussing an outdoor LED project with a customer.
A common mistake is to focus on pixel pitch or LED package before considering viewing distance.
Imagine two projects:
Project A: A highway advertising sign is viewed mainly from 30–100 meters away.
Project B: A storefront LED display is installed beside a pedestrian area, with viewers standing 3–5 meters away.
These two projects have completely different requirements.
For Project A, extremely fine pixel pitch may add cost without providing a noticeable benefit to the audience.
For Project B, coarse pixel pitch can make text and graphics appear less refined at close range.

This is why we don't recommend starting the selection process with “Which technology is better?”
We start with “How will people actually view this display?”
SMD has become increasingly common in LED displays, but that does not mean DIP has become obsolete.
For certain outdoor signage projects, DIP remains a practical engineering option.
Roadside displays and outdoor signs need sufficient brightness to remain readable during daylight.
DIP LED structures have traditionally been widely used for high-brightness outdoor signage, particularly where the display is viewed from a relatively long distance.
For these projects, the customer may care more about:
Daytime visibility
Stable brightness
Outdoor durability
Long operating hours
Easy module replacement
than extremely fine image resolution.
If a screen is installed beside a highway, for example, most viewers will not stand directly in front of it.
The content needs to communicate quickly while the vehicle is approaching or passing the sign.
In this situation, a larger-pitch DIP display can provide an appropriate balance between visibility, resolution, and project cost.
This is especially relevant for:
Highway advertising
Gas station signage
Commercial roadside displays
Industrial park signage
Large outdoor information boards
Not every outdoor LED display is showing high-resolution video.
Some projects mainly display:
Prices
Promotions
Brand names
Opening hours
Directional information
Short advertising messages
For this type of content, a DIP module with suitable brightness and pixel pitch can be more than adequate.
There is little benefit in paying for a much finer pixel pitch if the audience is too far away to see the difference.
There are also many situations where we would steer a customer toward SMD.
For storefronts, commercial facades, and displays installed near pedestrians, viewers may be only a few meters away.
In this situation, smaller pixel pitch becomes more important.
SMD is generally the better direction when the project requires:
Fine text
Detailed product images
High-resolution video
Close-range viewing
Fine-pitch outdoor advertising
If the screen is designed to reproduce photographs, product videos, animation, or other visually detailed content, SMD provides a wider range of fine-pitch configurations.
This is one reason SMD has become widely used for modern outdoor full-color LED displays.

Instead of simply comparing the two technologies by specifications, we recommend looking at the project from the buyer's perspective.

The important point is that DIP vs. SMD should not be treated as a simple “old vs. new” comparison.
They solve different project requirements.
As an LED module manufacturer, we normally look at several factors before suggesting a specific product.
This determines how fine the pixel pitch needs to be.
A display viewed from 50 meters does not need the same pixel density as one viewed from 5 meters.
We check whether the module will be exposed to: direct sunlight, rain,dust,humidity,high temperatures, coastal or corrosive environments.
Outdoor protection is just as important as the LED package itself.
A price board showing large numbers has different requirements from a commercial screen showing detailed product videos.
A screen running several hours per day has different requirements from a sign operating continuously.
For long-running projects, we pay particular attention to thermal management, power design, component quality, and aging performance.
This is often overlooked during the initial purchasing stage.
For large outdoor signs, the customer should consider how individual modules will be replaced several years later.
A module that is easy to access and replace can save considerably more maintenance time over the life of the display than a small difference in initial purchase price.
Consider a roadside advertising sign installed along a busy highway.
The screen is primarily used for:
Brand advertising
Fuel promotions
Price information
Short promotional messages
The main audience is approximately 30–100 meters away.
In this situation, we would not automatically recommend a fine-pitch SMD display.
A P10 DIP module can be a reasonable solution because the project prioritizes:
Long viewing distance + high outdoor visibility + simple content + cost control.
Our P10 single-color DIP module, for example, uses a 320 × 160 mm module format with approximately 10,000 pixels/m² and an IP65-rated design.
For a project with different viewing requirements, however, we would change the recommendation rather than forcing the same module into every application.
That is an important part of proper LED project selection.
When comparing suppliers, it is easy to focus on: DIP vs. SMD,pixel pitch, brightness and price.
But those numbers do not tell the whole story.

Waterproof construction
Connector design
Power distribution
Module uniformity
Aging test procedures

Two modules with the same pixel pitch and LED package can perform differently in an actual outdoor installation.
For B2B buyers, consistency between batches can also be important. A module used for large signage may need to be replaced years after the original installation, so maintaining stable specifications and color/brightness performance matters.

Start with viewing distance and content. If your audience is more than 10–15 meters away and the content is mostly text, prices, or simple branding, DIP is usually the more cost-effective direction. If viewers will be closer, or the screen needs to show detailed video or full-color advertising, SMD is generally the better fit.
No. DIP isn't an older version of SMD that's been phased out — it's still the practical choice for a specific set of outdoor applications, particularly long-distance, high-brightness signage where fine pixel pitch wouldn't add any visible benefit.
